Cockroach species found in Ontario
Identification changes the treatment. These guides cover the species, breeding and hiding places.
German Cockroach
Blattella germanica
The most common and most prolific cockroach in Ontario buildings, and the one behind the majority of kitchen and bathroom infestations.
Identification guide →Brown-banded Cockroach
Supella longipalpa
Hides higher up and further from water than other species, so it turns up in living rooms and bedrooms rather than only kitchens.
Identification guide →Oriental Cockroach
Blatta orientalis
The damp-basement cockroach. Slower and less wary than the others, and the one species that does not want a warm, dry room.
Identification guide →American Cockroach
Periplaneta americana
The largest cockroach found in Ontario, most often a commercial problem in kitchens, bakeries, and heated utility tunnels.
Identification guide →Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach
Parcoblatta pennsylvanica
An outdoor species that wanders into homes and cottages. It will not establish an indoor infestation, which changes the response entirely.

Common questions about cockroach control in Southwestern Ontario.
What do I need to do to prepare for the treatment?
Empty the cabinets and clear the counters around the sink, stove, and fridge; pull those appliances a few inches off the wall; clear access to outlets and under-sink areas; and deep-clean crumbs, grease, and standing water. Most importantly, do not spray any store-bought insecticide first — it ruins the bait. The full checklist is on this page.
Do I have to move my stove, fridge, and dishwasher?
Yes, please move them a few inches away from the wall if you safely can. The warm space behind and underneath these appliances is where German cockroaches shelter and breed, so reaching it is the single most important part of an effective treatment.
Do I need to put all my clothes in plastic bags before cockroach treatment?
Usually, no. Clothing does not normally need to be bagged for a targeted cockroach treatment. Preparation depends on the rooms and areas being treated, so follow the checklist provided for your property and keep access to affected baseboards, cupboards, appliances, and other treatment areas clear.
Do I need to empty my refrigerator before cockroach treatment?
No. Food inside the refrigerator normally does not need to be removed for a targeted cockroach treatment. Keep food sealed and follow the preparation instructions for counters, cupboards, and access around appliances. If your treatment requires anything different, we will tell you before the appointment.
Can you treat just one apartment if other units in the building have cockroaches?
Yes, we can inspect and treat a single apartment. Activity elsewhere in a multi-unit building can affect long-term control, so tell us what you know about neighbouring units and what building management has already done.
Do pots, pans, and dishes need to come out of the kitchen cabinets?
For cabinets and drawers being treated, they should be emptied so the technician can inspect and reach the relevant cracks, hinges, and edges. We provide the exact preparation checklist before the appointment.
What if my dishwasher is fixed in place and I cannot pull it out?
Do not force or damage a built-in appliance. Tell us before the visit. We will assess the available access and explain what can safely be reached during treatment.
How long does cockroach treatment take to work?
The response depends on infestation level, access, preparation, and the treatment used. We explain what to monitor and confirm the included free follow-up re-treatment schedule before booking.
Why am I seeing more roaches right after the treatment?
Continued or increased activity does not by itself prove that treatment has succeeded. Note where and when you see cockroaches and contact Wick for follow-up guidance.
How many treatments will I need?
The inspection and response to treatment determine the plan. Cockroach treatment includes free follow-up re-treatment; we explain the scope and schedule in your quote.
Are the products safe around food and pets?
Tell us about food-preparation areas, pets, and children before booking. We explain where products will be used and provide preparation, cleaning, and re-entry guidance based on the product label.
Is cockroach follow-up re-treatment included?
Yes. Cockroach treatment includes free follow-up re-treatment. Your quote confirms the scope, preparation requirements, and schedule before you book.
