How to identify it

Fully developed wings that extend well past the abdomen in males and just overlap it in females. Size alone usually separates it from the others.

Worth knowing

It can fly, but only rarely and clumsily. Finding one in a home is more often a sign of a nearby sewer or utility connection than of a household infestation.

Life cycle and behaviour

Why this species behaves the way it does, and what that means for how long treatment takes.

  • Egg cases hold about 16 eggs and are dropped indiscriminately by the female.
  • Incubation runs 24–60 days depending on temperature — warmer rooms mean faster turnover.
  • Nymphs moult seven to ten times before maturing, and adults can live up to two years.
  • A female produces 10–15 egg cases across her life.

How cockroaches are actually controlled

Cockroaches need food, water, and shelter. Removing any one of them puts the population under stress, and that does more long-term good than spraying ever will.

Step

Cut the water first

Condensation on a cold water pipe is enough to sustain a colony on its own. Fixing leaks and bringing humidity down removes the hardest resource for them to replace.

Step

Close the harbourage

Cockroaches are thigmotactic — they settle in cracks tight enough to touch their backs and bellies at once. Caulking crevices around plumbing, cabinets, outlets, and countertops takes those spaces away permanently.

Step

Clean before treating, not after

Residual product applied to greasy or dirty surfaces is close to useless. Degreasing and HEPA vacuuming first both removes insects physically and lets the treatment work as intended.

Step

Monitor to find the hotspots

Traps behind the fridge, under the sink, inside cabinet voids, and in bathroom vanities show where the population actually sits, so treatment goes where it counts instead of everywhere.
